Who is affected from snoring and obstructive sleep apnea?

Many people suffer from an untreated sleeping disorder. They do not know, that they are snoring and have undiagnosed breathing stops (sleep apnea). Due to the noise they disturb others and put their own health in danger. At the age of 30 years 10 % of men and 5 % of women are snoring, at the age of 60 years even 60 % of men and 40 % of women are affected. There exists a significant increase of snoring with age.

Snoring has the origin in the nose or throat through an obstruction of the airway. The obstruction is caused by a relaxation of the soft palate, tongue muscles and muscles of the mouth floor. Through the restriction during breathing the inhaled air is accelerated and vibration of the throat soft tissue develops so that the snoring noise occurs.
